SENIOR HOUSING UPDATE

A group of Thetford citizens, authorized by the Selectboard, has formed a committee to explore how to provide affordable housing for seniors in our town.  Our vision is to provide a range of solutions that will make it possible for seniors to remain part of this community.

The committee does not have one specific outcome in mind. Rather we understand that different seniors have different requirements and preferences. We recognize that safety, community, access to health care and affordability are important. We also know that seniors will want to have choices available to them within easy walking distance of a village and that seniors from neighboring towns may want to join us. Hence, the committee is looking a several parcels of land in Thetford, and will research the cost and
practicality of senior affordable housing that is stand-alone, that is with no social or health care services provided, and also more inclusive options where some services are available and included with occupancy.

We have been awarded a sizable community development grant through Pompanoosac Mills which will speed up the progress for start up funds.

A Support Services sub Committee meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7pm at Town Offices to work on resource education and community communication. The first part of this meeting is an open forum for all to come share ideas and ask questions.

This committee is mailing out a questionnaire to every household in early October to help us get a sense of some Senior needs and concerns.  Please fill out the survey promptly. Your input is important!!  Drop off boxes are located at: Baker's Store, Recycle Center, Isabell's, Latham Library, and our Town Offices.

The full Selectboard Committee meets the 2nd Thursday at 7pm at Town Offices.
