Energy-Saving Tips for Keeping Your Home Cool When It's Hot

To keep your house or apartment cool in the heat of summer, close doors and windows when the temperature outside is warmer than your home's interior.

Prevent the sun from heating your house by closing curtains or shades - insulated are best (and also work great in the winter for keeping the heat in and cold out). If heat has built up inside your home, use a window fan or box fan to pull hot air out.

When the outside temperature has cooled off, open up the house and use a fan in the window to pull the cool air in. Reduce sources of interior heat (and use less energy) by using the microwave or toaster oven instead of the regular oven. Cover pots when cooking and use the fan above the stove to pull hot air out.

TA NOTES

Thetford Academy will open its doors for the 2008-2009 school year on Wednesday, August 27. (Please note that the first day of school at Thetford Elementary School is Thursday, August 28.)  Sports practices for high school teams begin on Monday, August 11; so please be extra vigilant when driving on the hill, as the increased traffic once again flows in and out of the parking lots.

TA will host New Student Orientation Tours on Thursday, August 21, starting at 6:30 pm.  Please start in Anderson Hall to join up with a student tour guide.  Other activities to help usher in the new school year include the 7th Grade Parents' Welcome Night on Thursday, September 4, and the Welcome Dance for students in grades 8-12 on Friday, September 5, from 7:30-9:30 pm.

FOSTER CARE IN THE UPPER VALLEY

At any give time there are over a thousand children in the state's custody throughout Vermont. Between sixty and seventy of these children are in custody here in the Upper Valley. Many of these children are cared for in foster homes. Foster families do everything from providing children fun weekends away from their home to give their parents a break, to caring for children for many months, or years. However long the period of time they are in care is, Foster Care allows children the opportunity to grow, learn and flourish, and gives their families the time to grow and change themselves.

If you have an interest in learning more about helping children in foster care, please contact Courtney McGuire at 802 295 8840.

LATHAM LIBRARY

Something Sticky This Way Comes: A Syrup Tasting Event With "The Taste of Place" Author Amy Trubek.

On Thursday, August 21, 7 p.m., Latham Memorial Library is co-hosting an event at Norwich Public Library, featuring a reading of the author's new book, “The Taste of Place: A Cultural Journey Into Terroir” and the chance for you to taste the subtle differences in syrups from different soil and climate regions of Vermont and New Hampshire. The event is co-sponsored by the Upper Valley Land Trust and Valley Food & Farm, a program of Vital Communities.

Whether you're a dedicated localvore, foodie, sugar maker or just someone who really likes syrup on their pancakes, we encourage you to come to this fun event.

Here's an excerpt from the book description:  "How and why do we think about food, taste it, and cook it? While much has been written about the concept of terroir as it relates to wine, in this vibrant, personal book, Amy Trubek, a pioneering voice in the new culinary revolution, expands the concept of terroir beyond wine and into cuisine and culture more broadly. Bringing together lively stories of people farming, cooking, and eating, she focuses on a series of examples ranging from shagbark hickory nuts in Wisconsin and maple syrup in Vermont to wines from northern California. She explains how the complex concepts of terroir and goût de terroir are instrumental to France's food and wine culture and then explores the multifaceted connections between taste and place in both cuisine and agriculture in the United States."

Amy Trubek is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Vermont and previously taught at New England Culinary Institute. She is the author of "Haute Cuisine: How the French Invented the Culinary Profession" and of numerous articles that have appeared in The Boston Globe, Gastronomica, and other publications.
