THETFORD ENERGY COMMITTEE

Save gas: Properly Inflate Your Tires and Take the River Route

According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), passenger cars and light trucks wasted about 1.2 billion gallons of fuel driving on underinflated tires in 2005. GAO's report notes that the federal government and industry recommend drivers of passenger vehicles check their tire pressure at least once a month when tires are cold and inflate them to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. (See GAO-07-246R, Underinflated Tires, 9 Feb. 2007.) You can improve your gas mileage by up to 5 percent right here in town -- visit Chuck's Auto or Huggett's in East Thetford or Thetford Auto Service in Thetford Center for free air for tire inflation.

The US Department of Energy notes that "each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.30 per gallon for gas" (based on a price per gallon of $3.96; see www.fueleconomy.gov) and the Car Talk Guys advise against accelerating up hills. On your next commute or errand, pick up Route 5 in town or Route 10 across the river -- both roads have a fuel-efficient speed limit and fewer steep hills than I-91 -- and often they can get you to your destination just as conveniently as the highway (and sometimes faster).
