TOWN CLERK NOTES

For details on how the town of Thetford faired for 2008, the proposed budget, and town meeting articles, watch for your town report. It will be mailed on or before February 21. 

 

Your first glimpse of the discussions will be at Pre-town Meeting, held at Town Hall February 23, 7:30pm; all of the articles (to be voted) of the town meeting warning will be reviewed. Another important date is February 25. Unless you are already registered to vote, this is the last day for residents to register to vote for the 2009 town meeting and town voting.

 

TOWN MEETING - February 28, 9AM at Anderson Hall, Thetford Academy.

Morning snack bar by PTO, luncheon provided for a fee by the 7th grade to help fund their trip to Washington DC. Child Care will be provided by the National Honor Society from 9am until the lunch break.

 

TOWN VOTING - March 3 Voting; 8am – 7pm

 

RECREATION NOTES

We are looking to put together a Steering Committee for planning and to get a grant to start a Community Garden in 2009. Anyone interested should contact the Recreation Coordinator by the end of February.

PLANNING COMMISSION NEWS

There is an opening on the Planning Commission and we are looking for a volunteer to join our team.  We meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:15pm at the Town Offices. The meetings are usually over by 9:15pm.

THETFORD ENERGY COMMITTEE

Free Film: The 11th Hour, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. Rated PG. This 2007 film was designated a Critic's Pick by the film reviewers of the New York Times. Manohla Dargis calls The 11th Hour "essential viewing" as an "unnerving, surprisingly affecting documentary about our environmental calamity." (NYT 817/07). 

Please join the Thetford Energy Committee on Sunday, February 8, at 6 p.m. at the Thetford Hill Congregational Church on Rt. 113 for a viewing of The 11th Hour. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

CHOWDER SUPPER

What could be tastier than a bowl of hot chowder on a cold winter evening!

Come to Post Mills Church for a Chowder Supper at 5:30pm on February 21.

Menu includes:

Fish or Corn Chowder, Assorted Breads

Salad, A choice of Cakes and Beverages

"Food for Friends"   

In addition to the Thetford food-shelf  faithfully attended by Roberta Howard at the Town Office, Thetford Baptist Church (off Route 5, near Huggett's) offers a supplemental food pantry to those in need.

The church's pantry, "Food for Friends," provides a grocery bag of canned goods and frozen foods to any family upon request.  The pantry is OPEN each Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30 and Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:30.  Call Pastor John Hartley (785-2050) for alternative "pickup" times or for more information.

TA NOTES

*Thetford Academy celebrates its 65th Founders' Day on Friday, February 6, with music, indoor and outdoor games, snow sculptures, class competitions, and more.  The festivities start at 7:40 am in Anderson Hall with the traditional Candle-Lighting and continue throughout the morning.  The day closes with an all school banquet and the announcement of the Founders' Day class winners.  Please join us for any of the morning's activities; call 785-4805 for more information.

*The Board of Trustees monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, February 12.  It will start at 7:00 pm at the Thetford Center Community Building on Route 113 across from the Town Hall in Thetford Center.

*There will be no school February 16-20; students and staff will enjoy the break for winter recess.

*The Winter Sports Awards will be presented on Wednesday, February 26.  The evening starts at 7:00 pm in Anderson Hall.

T.E.N. - Thetford Elder Network

Ever wonder what the TEN (Thetford Elder Network) is up to? Sure, you've seen the notices about the luncheons, the seminar, and the meetings, but what else has kept the TEN busy?

Just since late spring, TEN volunteers have answered calls and helped with the following:
* giving rides for appointments and errands
* setting a mouse trap
* providing friendly company
* snow shoveling
* giving advice about a treed porcupine
If you're in need of help, or know someone who is, call the TEN Volunteers Helpline at 785-2129.
