SELECTBOARD UPDATE

The selectboard recently put together a list of contact information and a set of assignments for each board member. People looking to ask a board member about a specific contact can now go to http://www.thetfordvermont.us/selectboard.htm to see who might be the most appropriate individual for a given topic. As always, all citizens are welcome to attend the Selectboard meetings. (Public comment period appears on the agenda every meeting at 7 p.m., Mondays at Town Hall.)

The board welcomed a new Recording Clerk, with the hiring of resident Cheryl Ulz. Cheryl replaces Ann Fenton, who recently took on a key role at Fairlee's town hall.

In the past two months, the board has been busy creating and passing new local rules and policies. Among them are: Public Facilities Use Policy, Liaison Policy, Selectboard Rules of Procedure, Town Committee Finance Policy, Grants Policy. Other tasks have included; The reformulation of a Recreation Advisory Council, Soliciting bids for the new emergency shelter generator project, Creating savings with administrative changes to the current town healthcare plan, Developing a plan to reorganize two or three Town Hall offices to create better work efficiencies, Advising town groups about grant and stimulus money availability.

The board is continuing to seek input on a couple upcoming changes: We will be implementing a recycling sticker program, charging people a nominal fee for the use of the Recycling Center. Now that recycled materials no longer bring in revenue, we want to ensure that the facility is used generally by Thetford residents. Also, zoning fees will likely be raised to help account for the costs of administrating new development permits in town.

We are all very fortunate to have a large and dedicated group of citizens filling many town positions. Through the ready volunteering of these people, Thetford not only saves a great deal of money, but also enjoys a quality of governance that can only be provided by people who love their community. To that end, we have a few remaining spots open in town. If you think you might enjoy filling any of the following positions, please send an email to selectboard@thetford.us indicating your interest: Cemetery Commission (2 openings), Thetford Elder Network Committee, Tree Warden, Town Historian.

FRIENDS OF THETFORD EDUCATION MEETING

Don’t Miss This Opportunity to Make a Difference in Our Children’s Education!

Friends of Thetford Education will be holding its next meeting on Wednesday, May 6 at 7 pm in the Thetford Elementary School Special Education Conference room. At this meeting, we will be electing new board members and appointing new officers. We will also be looking ahead to the next year and wrapping up this year. All are welcome!

FTE is an organization consisting of parents who are dedicated to raising funds for the purpose of enhancing the educational enrichment of our children. Nearly 100% of the money we raise goes toward funding projects, field trips, special equipment, student performances, and other educational opportunities that are not covered by the school’s operating budget. FTE uses a very small amount to cover postage and minor operational expenses.

Attending a meeting will not commit you to anything! Just come along and see what we do. If you have questions, feel free to call Marty Jacobs (Chair) at 785-2606 or email at marty@systemsinsync.com.

VERMONT MOW DOWN POLLUTION – NEUTON BATTERY POWERED LAWN MOWERS

Vermont Mow Down Pollution is coming to the Hartford Community Center for Recycling and Waste Management, Saturday May 16 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

This is one of five events across the state where Vermont residents can purchase Neuton battery-powered lawn mowers at a $150 discount. You can also recycle your gas-powered mower for free, thanks to participating Solid Waste Management Districts. The discounted price applies while supplies last, so come early.

This program is supported by a grant from the Agency of Natural Resources and the support of several businesses, nonprofit and government entities, and electric utilities. For more information, visit http://www.neutonpower.com/VT

Another alternative to a gas-powered mower is a reel mower, powered by you. Organic Gardening recommends Scott’s Classic Reel Mower, which can be set to the recommended height of 3 inches for a healthy lawn. Many Upper Valley hardware stores carry reel mowers.

Some statistics about the environmental impact of gas-powered mowers:

A typical gasoline-powered lawn mower emits more than 87 pounds of climate changing carbon dioxide a year

Gasoline-powered lawn mowers cause at least five percent of the nation’s total air pollutants

Just one gas-powered lawn mower used for a year can pollute as much as 43 new cars driven for a year.

Stan Yarian and Niko Horster will talk about the challenges and the joy of keeping dairy animals on your family homestead or small farm. Discussion will include housing needs, care, feed, supplements, and pasture. Milking techniques and equipment as well as basic recipes for butter, yoghurt and fresh cottage style cheeses like ricotta and paneer will be presented.

Stan Yarian keeps and breeds goats and other critters, on his almost self-sufficient homestead in West Fairlee. Niko Horster owns and milks 3 Jerseys and makes cheese in Thetford Center.

May 16 - Extending the Gardening Season
Scott Stokoe will provide a brief overview of the various options available to help homeowners extend their gardening season, from cloches to attached solar greenhouses. Tim and Phebe McCosker will discuss the hoop house they erected last year, giving them lettuce and spinach until the end of December this winter and spinach again beginning March 1st. Scot Zens will demonstrate a homemade electrical metal tubing bending rack that will be available to community members for the purpose of making their own season extension hoop houses. He will also discuss methods that people can use to join the hoops together in a movable structure.

Scott Stokoe has been working with solar greenhouses, season extension and gardening for the past 30 years. As manager of the Dartmouth Organic Farm, he is currently working on a solar heated greenhouse project.

Tim and Phebe McCosker have been gardening for many years and have recently gotten interested in season extension, root cellars and organizing their gardening and cooking with an eye toward a diverse localvore diet.

Scot Zens and Christina Robinson raise chickens and turkeys for meat and grow a vegetable garden on Tucker Hill Road in Thetford Center.

DEEP ENERGY RETROFITS AND ZERO NET ENERGY HOMES

Marc Rosenbaum, P.E.: Deep Energy Retrofits and Zero Net Energy Homes

May 12, 7-8:30pm

Bugbee Senior Center, 262 North Main Street, White River Junction, VT 05001

Join the Upper Valley Land Trust, Sustainable Energy Resource Group (SERG), the Vermont Chapter of the SIERRA CLUB and the Vermont Earth Institute, as we host Marc Rosenbaum, P.E., for a presentation on Deep Energy Retrofits and Zero Net Energy Homes.  James Hansen recently spoke in the Upper Valley about the challenges we face due to climate change.  In his presentation, Rosenbaum will offer practical solutions to counteract this global threat.

As Peak Oil creeps up on us and the urgency of halting climate change sinks in, we'll need to fix the buildings we have and make new ones that don't need much energy. Rosenbaum will give us a view from the trenches of state-of-the-art low energy houses and extreme energy makeovers of existing homes.  Visit his company website for more information about him and his work: http://www.energysmiths.com.

There will be time for questions at the end of the evening.  The event is free and open to the public.  Please RSVP by contacting Nora at noradoyle-burr@uvlt.org or (603) 643-6626 ext. 102.
