RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Soccer Camp June 22-26  There is still time to sign up!  Camp this year is run by MLS Camps, who bring in coaches from the UK who are trained and schooled in the coaching of soccer to kids of all ages.  We are still looking for host families, so if you would like to host a coach in your home for the week (Sunday night - Saturday) and you have a spare room, please contact the Recreation Coordinator. 

 

Outdoor Camping Adventures - Come and Camp out overnight at Treasure Island on opening day, Saturday June 20!  Join us for an afternoon of learning about camping beginning at 2 PM with 4 classes: wilderness camping, canoe camping, basic camping skills and fire building taught by local experts, then stay for a group dinner and bonfire/marshmallow roast.  Also and optional pancake breakfast Sunday morning.  $20 fee.

Pre-registration is required by June 15.

 

Thetford Quest - An even more local version of Valley Quest! Thetford residents are challenged to complete all 12 Quests located in Thetford, then bring your field journal with the all 12 stamps you collected at each Treasure Box to win a prize!  You can then continue outside of Thetford on more Quests to win more prizes from Valley Quest.

 

Expedition Competition: Summit Challenge - Thetford Residents of all ages are challenged to hike up to 10 local summits between June 10 and September 10.  Points are awarded for each summit and bonus points are awarded for bringing along more people!  The top 3 point scorers will win gift certificates to Bradford Sports, and a prize will also be awarded for best picture and worst weather!

 

Summer adult sports pick-up schedule - all programs begin June 18.

Mondays: Volleyball at Treasure Island 6 -8 PM

Tuesdays: Fun Runs at the TA Cross Country Course, organized by Joe Deffner

Thursdays: Softball at TES 6-8 PM

Fridays: Soccer at TES 6-8 PM

Saturdays: Yard Games on the Thetford Center Common 6-8 PM (horseshoes, bocce, etc)

Teenagers who can play the game are welcome.

TREASURE ISLAND UPDATE

Opening Day: Saturday, June 20th.  Open 10AM-8PM everyday.  Admission: Adults - $3.00, Children - $1.00, seniors and under 2 free.  Season Passes available, Thetford Residents - $50/family, $30/individual.  Tennis is free with admission to the park.

ARC Swim Lessons: June 22-July 3//July 6-17//July 20-31//August 3-14.  $20.  Ages 4 and up - please sign up for one session only.  Registration: Sat., June 20 at 10AM at Treasure Island, or stop by the beach and speak to a lifeguard.

Tennis Clinic: June 20-25, M-F, 9-10AM.  $10.  Ages 7 and up. We have racquets.  To register, call 333-3507.

GuardStart: Junior Lifesaving for ages 11-14, Aug. 3-14, 12-1PM.  $29.  To register, call 333-3507

Weekly Events: Peabody Library StoryHour 10AM Tuesdays, Arts and Crafts 10AM Thursdays.

Community Cookouts: Opening Day, Saturday, June 20, 5:30PM & Friday, July 10, 5:30PM.  Please bring a dish and/or something for the grill.  Enjoy this special time of day at Treasure Island.  Canoes and Kayaks are welcome at Treasure Island.

Beach Party:  Friday, August 14, 12-3pm. Celebrate the last day of swim lessons with a party! Community Cookout Lunch 12PM, followed by FUN and GAMES.  Rain date:  Aug.17.

Island Reservations: Treasure Island also has Island Reservations available for large groups.

TA NOTES

*Thetford Academy will host its Spring Sports Awards and cookout on Tuesday, June 2, starting at 6:30 pm.

*On Wednesday, June 3, the TA Documentary Film Class will present a showing of their movie, “Tapped Out”. This film gives a rich description of the maple sugar industry and will be presented in the Shark Tank Theater at 7:00 pm.  Refreshments will be served.

*The Board of Trustees will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 4. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm and will be held in the TA Library. All are welcome to attend.

*The Spring Choral Concert will be held on Sunday, June 7, at 5:00 pm in Anderson Hall.  Please join us for the final musical presentation of the year.

*Baccalaureate exercises for the Class of 2009 will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, June 7, at the First Congregational Church of Thetford on the Thetford Hill Green.

*Thetford Academy proudly graduates 75 scholars on Friday, June 12. The ceremony will be held outside, weather permitting, and will begin at 6:30 pm. We congratulate our students and ask that everyone keep your fingers crossed for clear skies!

*Saturday, June 13, is Alumni Day at TA, with activities throughout the day and a banquet in Anderson Hall beginning at 6:00 pm. Contact the TA Development Office, 785-2600, for more information.

HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD WASTE COLLECTION

The Annual Spring Household Hazardous Waste collection day will be on June 6 from 9am to Noon at the Hartford Transfer Station, Route 5 South of White River Junction. This collection is for all residents of Greater Upper Valley Solid Waste Management District towns. Materials accepted will include oil based paints and stains, paint thinner, old gasoline and other flammable liquids, pesticides, cleaners, auto care products, and other household products that are labeled as hazardous. Materials that will not be accepted include smoke detectors, water based paints (dry out and throw away), alkaline batteries, medications, ammunition or other explosives, asbestos, or clean used motor oil (take to the Hartford recycling center or other reuse option).

ANNE SLADE FREY CHARITABLE TRUST

The Spring 2009ASF grant recipient from Thetford is:
Operation Day's Work, Thetford Academy, Thetford;  $500 in support of four students and a teacher going to the Global Heath Council's International Health Conference in Washington, DC where students will interact with global leaders in health, development, policy and advocacy.

RICES MILLS POTLUCKS

Rices Mills Potlucks are held the first Sunday of the month at 6pm. We'd love to have new folks join us for these casual local gatherings.
