TOWN COMMON NEWS

Have you been watching the evolution of the land across from the Village Store in Thetford Center this summer? It’s emerging as our town common. Now that it has been leveled and seeded, we have a great green space to develop into a common for all of Thetford to use. The Town Common Committee has acquired playground equipment that will ready for use soon. We also have marked out a walking path around the common.  Please come try it out!

We’re planning a Town Common Day to take place on Saturday, October 21st from 9:00 to noon.  It’s your opportunity to contribute to this community resource.  Would you and your family like to plant a tree so that you can watch it grow over the year?  Are you interested in building stone retaining walls?  Would you like to donate a bench to be placed around the walking path?  How about building a horseshoe pit or setting up a picnic area?

We’d really like everyone to be part of the town common’s creation so please mark your calendars and plan on coming.  For more information, contact Sue Gault at shop@gaultantiques.com or 785-2805.

FRIGHT NIGHT stories by Simon Brooks
Friday the 13th Oct - - 8.30pm - - Latham Library

A cool evening breeze rushes by you, or is it a ghost? No one really can tell. This evening is not for very young children! These tales are told to put a tingle down your spine. These stories are told to make you jump. These yarns are told to make you look over your shoulder as you put the keys in the car door to drive home! Put those prone to nightmares to bed and come out for a chilling, thrilling evening! Heh, heh, heehhh.

FRONT PORCH HALLOWEEN OCTOBER 31   5-8PM
Celebrate Halloween on Latham's front Porch.  Costumed trustees will be giving out books and candy to trick or treaters! (Sadly, there will not be a haunted house this year.)

COMMUNITY CORNER - THURSDAYS 7pm-8pm

starting OCTOBER 26TH
The Library trustees want to promote community spirit through discussions, ideas and sharing of expertise with people in our own town.  Townspeople will be invited to give 45 minute presentations with 15 minutes for questions and answers Thursday evenings twice a month. Presenters can share about professions, hobbies, or travels or lead conversations on community concerns.

Future COMMUNITY CORNER dates:

Oct. 26th, Nov. 9th and Nov.30th.

All programs will begin promptly at 7pm and finish at 8pm. Our whole community is invited!

Contact Gina Sonne 785-4220 if you are interested in participating.

The basement room is being transformed into a homey space for these gatherings. We are looking for a large area rug in very good condition, folding hinged screens, a few comfy gently worn chairs, and a few floor lamps. If you have any of these to donate please contact Trustees:  Lisa Ladd, Darla LaRoche or Betsy Edmunds.

TA NOTES

*The Vermont Alliance for Arts Education, which is under the umbrella of the Kennedy Center in Washington, has chosen Martha Rich, TA Head of School, as this year's recipient of its award, Art Advocate of the Year. This prestigious award is one of two awards presented each year to Vermont educators, one for arts education and one for advocacy for the arts, for which Martha has been recognized. This is a tremendous honor, both for Martha and all of TA. Congratulations!!

*Thetford Academy invites families to Parents' Back to School Night on Thursday, October 5, starting at 7pm in Anderson Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to follow student schedules, meet teachers, and see the classrooms.

*We're off and running once again on Saturday, October 7, at the annual Woods Trail Run. As always, volunteers are needed to ensure the smooth operation of this major undertaking; this year we expect 2300 runners and their coaches and families. Please contact David McGinn at 785-4805 x 214 or David.McGinn@Thet.Net to join our volunteer team.

*Saturday, October 14, there will be a bottle and can drive at the Thetford Recycling Center from 9-noon. Money raised will benefit the French Trip.

*Please join us for another "Talk with TA" on Thursday, October 26, at 6pm in the TA Library. This is an excellent opportunity to chat with members of the Board of Trustees and to make suggestions, raise concerns, and have questions answered. "Talk with TA" is followed by the quarterly full board meeting at 7pm; and the public is also welcome at that meeting.

*Community members and others have another chance to be part of an exciting cross country experience by volunteering at the Vermont Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 28. TA is privileged to host the VT Championships each year, and our incredible volunteer team is a vital part of the reason why we have this opportunity. Please call or email David McGinn at TA (David.McGinn@Thet.Net) to sign on.

*Volunteer sign up forms for other activities at TA were recently distributed to students and their families. If you would like to receive one, please contact Wendy Cole (Wendy.Cole@Thet.Net) to have one sent. We welcome folks with a wide variety skills and interests and look forward to hearing from you.
