TOWN CLERK NOTES

 

Town Reports have been mailed! Town Meeting Warning is on page 11 so be sure to see what will be decided at Town Meeting. Please enjoy the pictures and articles.

 

March 1: Town Meeting at Thetford Academy, 9am

 

March 4: Voting by Australian ballot at Town Hall 8am -7pm

Don’t forget the Food drive to support the Thetford Food Shelf!

 

March 29: Rabies Clinic at Town Garage 10-Noon

Rabies and other vaccinations available for cats and dogs - Licensing will be available at Town Hall.

 

This March there will be a food drive to benefit the Thetford food shelf.  To contribute, you may bring non-perishable food items to Town Hall when you come to vote on March 4.  Soups are very popular; there is also a demand for personal care items. Monetary donations are also accepted.

 

 

CHURCH AUCTION

 

The First Congregational Church in Thetford (on the Hill, across from the Green) will hold their 3rd annual Live and Silent Auction on SATURDAY MARCH 15th from 12:00 - 3:30. Lunch and dessert will be served all afternoon. 

 

Please join us for a fun afternoon full of laughter and great bargains!

 

If you would like to donate items or have good quality furniture, carpets or other large things to donate and need us to pick them up please call Susan at 649-2681.  Thanks and see you on the 15th!

PEABODY LIBRARY NEWS

 

Mystery, suspense, romance...murder?!  Join mystery novelist Sarah Stewart Taylor for a reading and signing of Still As Death, the most recent installment in her popular Sweeney St. George series. A nominee for the Agatha Award, Sarah is also the cofounder of the Writers' Center in White River Junction. Be sure to ask her about the Center's upcoming workshops!

Vermont Audubon Event - "Jewels of the Northern Forest."  Meet Bridget Butler, Vermont Audubon's Conservation Education Coordinator and host of the radio show "BEEKS - A Bird Geek's Delight." Bridget will offer a slide show presentation on the many woodland birds that migrate to Vermont each spring. Older kids (7 and up) may enjoy this event - Bridget's very funny and includes bird song impressions in her presentation. Sunday, March 30, 2 pm Co-sponsored by Audubon Vermont and Vermont Coverts: Woodlands for Wildlife.

LATHAM LIBRARY NEWS

 

"Gardening Guy" Henry Homeyer. Get ready for gardening season with the popular columnist for The Valley News.  Reading and book signing of The Vermont Gardener's Companion as well as sale of Henry's other books, plus gardening question and answer time with a man who really knows his plants.  

Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m.

 

Author Catherine Tudish. The acclaimed author of Tenney's Landing will do a book reading and signing of her novel American Cream.  A former literature professor at Harvard, Catherine currently teaches at the Bread Loaf School of English and Dartmouth College. She was one of three finalists for the Barnes & Nobles Great New Writers Award in 2005. This is a great event for aspiring writers, as well as anyone who appreciates good writing. Thurs., March 13, 7 p.m.

 

Latham's Mud Season Booksale. Please contact Peter Blodgett to donate books and/or your volunteer time to this annual community event!  Then come by Latham from 1-5 pm on Friday, March 28; 10am – 1pm on Saturday, March 29 and Monday 2-6 pm on Monday, March 31 to peruse a wide collection of cheap books, ranging from popular fiction to classics, gardening guides to biographies and political essays. We encourage you to bring your own bags - although you're also welcome to use ours.

SHAKESPEARE AT TES

 

Save the dates! On Wednesday and Thursday, April 9th and 10th, the Thetford Elementary School Fifth and Sixth Grades will present "The Shrewd" an adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew", directed by Artist-in-Residence David Kelman.

 

Watch for the announcements of this wonderful community event in April.

RECREATION NOTES

 

If you are planning on trying out for the Little League majors baseball team, please get your registration form in ASAP.  Sign up for recreation baseball, t-ball and softball are still available. Practice and game schedules will be available in April.

 

After school Karate will be available on Wednesdays from April 23 - May 28 from 3:15-4:15 in the TES gym.  This is intended to be a full session because the class will progress from week to week.  Cost is $30 for the session.  Registration forms are available at the Town Hall.

 

Brochures will be available at Town Meeting and at the Town Hall describing our upcoming spring and summer programs.  Please contact me with any questions.

 

Monday evenings 5-7 PM are bowling nights in March.  Bowl together with your friends and neighbors. Contact the recreation director by Friday each week to reserve your spot –

TA NOTES

 

*Thetford Academy's entry in the Vermont Drama Festival Competition, "The Inner Circle," by Patricia Loughrey, will be performed on Thursday, March 6, at 7:30 pm.  The play will either be presented in the Shark Tank or at the Eclipse Grange; the update on location will be announced soon.  A second performance will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 3 pm at the regional competition at Hartford High School.

 

*TA will be hosting a program with a guest speaker on Internet Safety in mid-March for parents and other interested members of the public.  Date, time, and location will be announced shortly.

 

*In late March Thetford Academy eighth graders will be participating in the annual Job Shadow Day.  Please contact TA at 785-4805 if you are interested in having a student learn more about your occupation for a day.
