Energy-Saving Tips for Keeping Your Home
Cool When It's Hot
To keep your house or apartment cool in the heat of summer, close doors and
windows when the temperature outside is warmer than your home's interior.
Prevent
the sun from heating your house by closing curtains or shades - insulated are
best (and also work great in the winter for keeping the heat in and cold out).
If heat has built up inside your home, use a window fan or box fan to pull hot
air out.
When
the outside temperature has cooled off, open up the house and use a fan in the
window to pull the cool air in. Reduce sources of interior heat (and use less
energy) by using the microwave or toaster oven instead of the regular oven.
Cover pots when cooking and use the fan above the stove to pull hot air out.

Something Sticky This Way Comes: A Syrup Tasting Event
With "The Taste of Place" Author Amy Trubek.
On
Thursday, August 21, 7 p.m., Latham Memorial Library is co-hosting an event at
Norwich Public Library, featuring a reading of the author's new book, “The
Taste of Place: A Cultural Journey Into Terroir” and the chance for you to
taste the subtle differences in syrups from different soil and climate regions
of Vermont and New Hampshire. The event is co-sponsored by the Upper Valley
Land Trust and Valley Food & Farm, a program of Vital Communities.
Whether you're a dedicated
localvore, foodie, sugar maker or just someone who really likes syrup on their
pancakes, we encourage you to come to this fun event.
Here's
an excerpt from the book description: "How and why do we think about
food, taste it, and cook it? While much has been written about the concept of
terroir as it relates to wine, in this vibrant, personal book, Amy Trubek, a
pioneering voice in the new culinary revolution, expands the concept of terroir
beyond wine and into cuisine and culture more broadly. Bringing together lively
stories of people farming, cooking, and eating, she focuses on a series of
examples ranging from shagbark hickory nuts in
