THETFORD ACADEMY
NEWS AND NOTES
*Thetford Academy will host a Parent Café and Coffehouse in the TA Library on Friday, December 3, from 7:30-9:30 pm, for parents bringing students to the 9th Grade Dance at TA that night. Folks are encouraged to come in, relax, and meet others until the dance is over, instead of driving back and forth. The evening is sponsored by the Parent Advisory and Advocacy Council (PAAC), and all are welcome---even if you don’t have a student attending the dance.
*On Sunday, December 5, at 4:30 pm the Thetford Academy Alumni Association (TAAA) will host the annual Memory Tree Lighting Dedication on the lawn in front of the White Building. Refreshments will be served in the TA Library after the ceremony.
* Next year, Thetford Academy will enroll 5-8 international students. This exciting new program will bring students from around the world to learn in our vibrant community. These students will also bring cultural diversity and provide current TA students the opportunity to broaden their educational perspective.
International students will be housed in home stay accommodations. On Wednesday, December 8, we will be holding an information session at the Academy for more information about home stay. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more, please contact Stacy Barton, International Student Program Coordinator at stacy.barton@thet.net or 802-785-4805 x228.
*The TA Board of Trustees will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, December 9, at 7:00 pm in the TA Library. The meeting is open to the public, and all are invited to attend.
*Saturday, December 11, marks the date for the opening basketball games in the new TA gymnasium. The season will open with a girls/boys quadruple header. The JV and Varsity girls will host South Royalton, followed by the Varsity and JV boys playing Blue Mountain.
*The Winter Instrumental Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 14, at 7:00 pm in the Martha Jane Rich Theater in Anderson Hall. The Choral Concert will be later in January.
*TA will host “Poetry Outloud” on Friday, December 17. The second annual contest of poetry memorization and reciting will be held from 2:30-4:00 pm in the Martha Jane Rich Theater in Anderson Hall.
*Thetford Academy will be closed from December 23-January 2 for the December recess. School will reopen on Monday, January 3. We wish everyone peace, love, and laughter throughout all this season of holidays.

SAVE ENERGY IN
THE LAUNDRY ROOM
Washing
clothes in cold water saves energy on water heating. Wash full loads, and
choose shorter cycle times for less soiled loads. When it’s stormy or too cold
to hang laundry outside to dry, set up a drying rack by the wood stove or near
the furnace.
Efficiency
Vermont is offering rebates of up to $50 for purchases of Energy Star washing
machines. This offer is good through
December 31st. To learn more, visit their website at: www.efficiencyvermont.com

DID YOU KNOW? THETFORD HISTORY
Most residents of Thetford know it as the
home of such accomplished writers as Grace Paley, Noel Perrin, and Anne
Lindbergh. But did you know that Thetford was also the home of a
prominent 19th-century artist? William Baxter Palmer Closson
was born in Thetford in 1848, and graduated from Thetford Academy before moving
to Boston, where he studied drawing at the Lowell Institute and went on to work
for Harper's Magazine. He went on to a career in wood engraving and
painting, earning accolades in both the United States and Europe.
Seventeen of his paintings are in the American Art collection at the
Smithsonian Institute.
