Statement of Purpose

For the purposes of this list, we’ve defined the “Woodstock Community” as the town of Woodstock – plus the seven towns that share a geographic border with Woodstock. These towns include Barnard, Bridgewater, Hartland, Pomfret, Quechee (only), Reading, and West Windsor.

If you are a resident or owner of a business in one of these towns, you are invited to post messages on this list.

If you live outside the Woodstock Community as defined above, you are welcome to subscribe, but you are not allowed to post messages on this listserv.

List Guidelines

If you are a resident or owner of a business in our community, you are invited to post messages on the listserv by sending an email with a subject and a brief message.

Your message will be combined into a single email (the “Daily Digest”) and sent to all subscribers. Any message posted before midnight will be included in the next day’s issue of the Woodstock Community Listserv.

Keep it local. The Woodstock Community Listserv is specifically designed for the residents of Woodstock and its neighboring towns. Please refer to the list above for the towns included in our community. If you reside in a different town and are considering posting on the Woodstock Community Listserv, we kindly ask that you share your message on your own town's list or Front Porch Forum. This ensures the information reaches the right audience, even if you believe it would interest the Woodstock community. Thank you!

Keep it respectful. Please ensure that all contributions remain respectful and considerate of fellow subscribers. Email has no “tone of voice,” so take care in what you write. Discuss issues, not people. Don’t ascribe motives to other people. Remember that you might not have all the facts. This community is intended to foster constructive discussion, collaboration, and the open exchange of ideas in a positive environment. Disagreements are natural, but they must be expressed in a civil and professional manner. Personal attacks, harassment, discriminatory remarks, or any form of abusive or hostile language are not acceptable under any circumstances.

The List Manager, along with the administration of Vital Communities, reserves the right to review all posts and determine whether conduct violates these standards. If such violations occur, appropriate action may be taken, which can include temporary suspension of posting privileges or permanent removal from the platform.

Keep it original. To maintain the quality of this listserv, please do not forward content that has already appeared elsewhere. If there is an appropriate article on the web that you would like to reference, please summarize your point and provide a link to the source. Posting copyrighted material is not allowed. Additionally, it is inappropriate to share the content of any private correspondence to or from a list member without obtaining express permission from all parties involved.

Keep it short. Our goal is to keep things easy to read and respectful for everyone. When you post, be clear and to the point. Long messages can make it harder for others to follow, potentially discouraging subscribers from reading your post. Please limit your post to 300 words unless you have made prior arrangements with the List Manager.

Link to long documents. If your content exceeds 300 words, please write a brief summary and include a link to a Google Doc. There are no length restrictions on linked documents. Feel free to write anything you want, regardless of length. It’s easy to create a link to a Google Doc. To see how, watch this short video: https://youtu.be/7q6h1fYuYM4?si=vuzG6Ga6vdt7dCbZ

Limit your posts. If you have an item to sell or a service to promote, please limit your posts to once per week. You are welcome to post until your item is sold, but please refrain from posting more often to avoid overwhelming the service.

Avoid embedded images. The software that runs this listerv does not support embedded or attached image files. If you include an image in your message, attach an image file, or add an image in the footer of your message (commonly referred to as stationery), your message will be rejected and will not be posted.

Sign your post. Please make sure to include your first name, last name, and town at the end of your post. Anonymous submissions (even if your name is mentioned within the post or in your email address) may result in you being added to the "unknown" list, which could prevent you from posting in the future.

Create an eye-catching title. The subject of your email will serve as the title for your post. Make it eye-catching or thought-provoking. Avoid using all capital letters.

Proofread your message. The body of your email will be sent as is, including any spelling errors, so please proofread your writing before pressing the SEND button. Once your message is sent, it cannot be modified.

List Manager’s Authority.  The list is overseen by a volunteer list manager. The List Manager does not review posts before they are published. Rather, they revoke posting privileges for subscribers who don’t follow the guidelines. The List Manager has the authority to warn, suspend, or permanently exclude any subscriber for any abuse or infringement of these rules and guidelines.  A subscriber will be notified if their posting privileges are suspended or revoked, and the reason for the action will be shared with the subscriber. The decision to block subscribers for violation of the guidelines rests with the List Manager and Vital Communities.
